Hearing Loss - Causes and Solutions

WHAT ARE THE

SIGNS OF HEARING LOSS?

CAUSES , REASONS , PREVENTION AND SOLUTIONS?

Hey All 💜

Do any of you or your loved ones experience or show signs of hearing loss?  You might think that hearing loss is something that most people can detect themselves.

However, it can often occur gradually, often making it unnoticeable until it becomes severe. In many cases, other people are the ones that may pick up on it. Below are just a few ways that you can tell a loved one is losing their hearing.

The Volume On The TV Is Always Very LOUD

When watching their favourite TV shows, do they always put the volume up to an excessive level? It’s possible that the volume may sound normal to them, in which case they may be losing their hearing.

They Keep Asking You To Repeat Yourself

If your loved one constantly asks you ‘sorry?’ or ‘what was that?’, it’s possible that they may just be overly distracted - or they could be losing their hearing.

Occasionally, we all have to tell people to repeat themselves, but if it’s happening on a regular basis when you’re in the same room, it could be a problem. You may find that phone conversations and conversations in crowded places are particularly bad for this.

They Often Complain About Background Noises

Many people experiencing hearing loss find it harder to tune into a specific sound - sometimes the background noise can take over. If your loved one constantly complains about a restaurant being too noisy or not being able to hear you over the TV, hearing loss could be a possible reason.

They Don’t Respond To Ringing Phones / Doorbells / Alarm Clocks etc.

Do you have to tell your loved one that their mobile phone is ringing or that the doorbell has just rang? Do they regularly sleep through their alarm? This could be another sign that your loved one is experiencing hearing loss.

The Four Levels of Hearing Loss – Where Do You Fit?

🠊Mild Hearing Loss. The quietest sounds people with mild hearing loss can hear are between 25 and 40 dB.

🠊Moderate Hearing Loss. On average, someone with moderate hearing loss cannot hear sounds that are less than 40-75 dB.

🠊Severe Hearing Loss.

🠊Profound Hearing Loss.

What to do if you think your loved one is experiencing hearing loss…

If you suspect that they may be experiencing hearing loss, you should encourage them to take a hearing test. This will determine whether or not their sense of hearing is healthy. Such a test is best conducted by a qualified audiologist.

It’s often possible to correct hearing loss by wearing a hearing aid. Some people can require a bit of convincing when it comes to wearing hearing aids - if your loved one is stubborn, you may have to be prepared for times when they refuse to wear their hearing aid.

It could be important to make them understand that wearing a hearing aid can improve their quality of life by reducing stress, headaches and making conversations easier.

Nowadays, hearing aids come in all different shapes, making it easier to find one that is comfortable and suited to you.

In many cases, hearing loss can continue to get worse over time, so make sure that loved one goes for regular checks. This will ensure that they’ve always got the right prescription.

You should also make sure that your loved one is keeping their hearing aid well-maintained. If a hearing aid is not kept in the right conditions it could get damaged and may stop working properly.
